An ‘Assault’ is a general term which can include several different types of offences involving violence. All of which are committed against another person by either inflicting unwanted physical contact or putting someone in fear of such contact. The specific assault offence charged, will usually depend upon the type of injury alleged to have been inflicted.
There are three basic types of assault:
Common Assault
No injury required
Actual Bodily Harm (ABH)
Injury that is more than trivial
Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH)
Really serious harm
These criminal offences cover everything from threatening words to permanent disfigurement or disability.
